Photo staging – putting the best foot forward

For senior living communities, one of the biggest challenges to having quality local stock art is the need to protect the privacy of residents, especially those in assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing.

When I started with PMMA, the photography library did not include images of the properties that did not include current or former residents, which meant the images were subject to frequent sunsetting when a resident died or moved to a higher level of living. The management of the photo library was nearly impossible.

To provide images for the community websites, we began a process of photographing the interior and exterior spaces in communities without people in them, in a more real estate style. This enabled us to make the spaces look their best and extend the life of the images.

Staging the spaces to look inviting and warm is key. Through the use of plants, pillows, blankets, accessories, and re-arranging furniture, we’ve created inviting photography of our campuses throughout the system.

Since that first shoot, I’ve expanded our prop library to include pictures, pillows, throws, towels, kitchen accessories and outdoor patio accessories to beautify spaces for photography. Both working with professional photographers and shooting myself, I’ve staged apartments, cottages, patios, dining rooms, and studio residences for photography.
