As a general assignment reporter at the Newton Kansan from 1996-2000, I had the opportunity to design front pages of the newspaper while covering for vacations or working on the Saturday paper on Friday night. I really enjoyed layout because it gave me the opportunity to be creative with the elements. When gas prices started to go up and we did a story about how that was affecting people, I incorporated a dollar sign into the headline.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to a color printer to save these front page images for my portfolio. I intentionally found ways to pull in colors we didn’t normally use, particularly if those colors picked up something from the main image on the front page.
