Giving promotions 2009-2012

In 2009, we started a four-year cycle of promoting the different ways that funds given to the annual conference are used in Kansas East and Kansas West. Each year focused on a different set of ministries and included videos, bulletin inserts and brochures. The materials were created from interviews conducted for the video segments, which were then provided to congregations on DVD for their use.

I was involved in the initial planning of the four-year cycle, identifying the ministry areas to be featured, determining which ministries would be featured in video versus print format, final script approvals, finding or shooting images for the printed materials and writing and editing the copy used for the printed pieces.

In 2009, we focused on Developing Disciples. Video segments included United Methodist colleges and seminaries and interviews with current or former students, youth ministry, efforts to support leadership in small membership churches and the leadership incubator process for developing church leaders in mid-sized and larger congregations. Printed pieces included these ministries and four others that focus on developing practices of discipleship.

In 2010, we focused on Rebuilding Lives and Communities. Video segments included disaster response and volunteers in mission, medical mission sites and social service assistance sites.

In 2011, we focused on creating new faith communities with the theme Calling New Disciples. Video segments featured Hispanic Ministry, new church development, the ABIDE leadership development program and a new Native American ministry in Kansas City started as part of the General Board of Discipleship’s Path 1 project.

And finally, in 2012 we focused on the support ministries that keep everything running smoothly in the conference. Video segments featured the bishop and district superintendents and the communications staff.

The economy significantly hampered efforts to improve funding from the churches in 2009 and 2010, but payout improved in 2011 and is on track to come in even better in 2012.
